| A book came out in 2009 called Born to Run. It told the story of a running people in Mexico, the Raramuri, also known as the Tarahumara. One drink from that book got famous. Chia seeds, water, and a squeeze of lime. Runners everywhere started making it. Then labs tested it, and the results were not what anyone expected. Here's the drink first, then the honest story… Ingredients, Serves 1Ready in 10 minutes1 tablespoon chia seeds1 cup cold waterJuice of 1/2 lime1 teaspoon honey, optionalTiny pinch of salt, optional MethodStir the chia seeds into the water. Keep stirring for 30 seconds so they don't clump.Let the glass sit for 10 minutes. The seeds swell and the water turns thick.Stir again, then add the lime juice. Add honey and salt if using.Drink it while the gel is loose. Give it another stir if it sits too long. The Drink Behind The Legend The Raramuri live in the canyons of northern Mexico. They have a long running tradition, and the drink they make is called iskiate. It's chia soaked in water, often with lime. Born to Run turned that into a global habit. The book is a good read, but it isn't research. Harvard researchers went and asked the runners themselves. Daniel Lieberman and his team interviewed elderly Raramuri runners for a 2020 paper in Current Anthropology. Their point was blunt. Raramuri running is social and ceremonial, not proof of a superhuman body. What Happened When Labs Tested It For Running Two trials put chia up against real athletic tests. Neither one found the boost people expected. In 2011, Travis Illian and colleagues at the University of Alabama ran a small study. Six trained men did an hour-long run, then a 10k time trial. Half the trials used a sports drink with chia mixed in. The rest used the sports drink alone. The finish times were nearly identical. One group came in at 37 minutes 49 seconds. Another came in at 37 minutes 43 seconds. That work ran in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. David Nieman at Appalachian State tested chia seed oil in 24 runners. Blood omega-3 levels shot up by more than 300 percent. Time to exhaustion didn't budge. His team published that in 2015 in the journal Nutrients. So here's the honest line. No human trial has shown that chia makes you run better. What The Seed Does Do The running story is a dead end. The blood pressure story is more interesting. Vladimir Vuksan led a team at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. They gave 20 people with type 2 diabetes about 37 grams of chia a day for 12 weeks. The comparison group got wheat bran instead. Systolic blood pressure ended about 6 points lower in the chia group. A marker of inflammation dropped too. The team published that in 2007 in Diabetes Care. One caveat is worth naming. Part of that gap came from the comparison group's pressure going up, not just chia bringing it down. Read the rest of the paper and it gets quieter. Blood sugar didn't improve. Cholesterol didn't improve either. **THE FINDING:** In a 2007 trial at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, 20 adults with type 2 diabetes took chia daily for 12 weeks. Systolic blood pressure fell by about 6 points against the comparison group. Blood sugar and cholesterol did not change. Published in Diabetes Care. A second Toronto study baked chia into white bread. Eleven healthy people ate it, and the more chia the bread held, the smaller their blood sugar rise after the meal. That one ran in 2010 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Both studies are small. They also used the same proprietary chia. Keep that in mind before you treat either as settled. And chia is not a weight-loss seed. Nieman's team gave 76 overweight adults 50 grams a day for 12 weeks. Nothing changed on the scale. That trial ran in 2009 in Nutrition Research. The Numbers On The Seed Itself Strip away the trials and the seed still holds up. One ounce of chia, about 2 tablespoons, carries close to 10 grams of fiber. It also carries about 5 grams of alpha-linolenic acid, a plant omega-3 fat. Call it ALA from here on. That same ounce brings 177 milligrams of calcium and 136 calories, per USDA data. A tablespoon, the amount in this drink, is a bit under half of that. Ten grams of fiber in one scoop is a lot. Most adults fall well short of their daily fiber target. About That Gel Drop chia in water and it turns into a soft gel. The seed coat holds a soluble fiber called mucilage. Call it the gel fiber from here on. You'll read online that this gel slows your stomach and keeps you full for hours. Careful there. No human study has actually measured chia's effect on stomach emptying. The idea comes from how thick fibers behave in general. In the 2010 bread study, hunger ratings did run lower after the chia loaf. That's one small trial, not a promise. One Rule You Should Not Break Never eat chia seeds dry and then drink water. A doctor named Rebecca Rawl presented a case at a 2014 gastroenterology meeting. A man swallowed a spoonful of dry chia, then drank. The seeds swelled in his esophagus and had to be removed by scope. Soaking first is the whole point of iskiate. That's also why this drink is the safe way to eat chia. One more note. Ten grams of fiber can upset a gut that isn't used to it. Start with a teaspoon if you're new to it, and drink plenty of water. Three Things Worth Knowing Before You Make It 01Stir Twice, Not OnceChia clumps the second it hits water. Stir when you add it, then stir again after 10 minutes. Otherwise you get one gummy lump at the bottom of the glass. 02Start With A TeaspoonA tablespoon holds about 4 grams of fiber. That's a jump for most people. Begin with a teaspoon for a few days, then work up. 03The Lime Is Doing Real WorkPlain soaked chia tastes like nothing. Lime makes the glass drinkable, which is the difference between a habit and a jar of seeds you forget about. Here's What I'd Do This WeekMake one glass of chia fresca on a warm afternoon. It's a better swap than a soda.Soak the seeds every single time. Never swallow them dry.Start with a teaspoon, not a tablespoon. Your gut will thank you.Don't expect a faster 10k. The trials are clear on that one. A famous book sold this drink as running fuel. The labs looked, and that part didn't hold. What's left is still worth your ten minutes. A cheap seed, a real fiber load, and one trial pointing at blood pressure. Make a glass this week. Just make it for the right reasons. **Stay well,**The Healing Plate |
