- Description: You spend most of your life indoors. Here's what actually cleans the air in a room, and what only looks like it does.

| Fresh air was the first thing I wrote about back in July. Time to come back to it, from the other side. Because most of your breathing doesn't happen outdoors. A big survey of how Americans spend their days put it at 87 percent indoors. Neil Klepeis and colleagues ran the numbers in 2001\. Add time in cars and you're near 90. So the air that matters most is the air in your kitchen… The Study On Every Plant Blog In 1989, a NASA scientist named Bill Wolverton published a report on houseplants and air pollution. He sealed plants in small boxes and pumped in harsh chemicals. Then he watched what happened. Over 24 hours, some plants pulled out as much as 90 percent of what he'd added. That report launched a thousand articles. The work is real. It just doesn't mean what people think. Those boxes were sealed shut. Your living room is not. Then Two Engineers Did The Arithmetic Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring at Drexel University went back through 12 of these studies. That's 196 data points in all. They asked one plain question. How much clean air does a potted plant give you, next to the air a room swaps out on its own? The answer was brutal. You would need 100 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor to match what a room already does. That's not a living room. Picture a greenhouse with a couch in it. Their paper ran in 2020, in a journal on how people are exposed to pollution. **THE FINDING:** In 2020, Bryan Cummings and Michael Waring at Drexel University reworked 12 lab studies of houseplants and air. To match the cleaning a room already gets from fresh air, you would need 100 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor. Opening a window does more in a minute than a shelf of plants does all day. Keep your plants. They're good for other reasons. Just don't count them as air cleaning. What's Actually In Your Air The Environmental Protection Agency has measured this for decades. Many common pollutants run 2 to 5 times higher indoors than out. The sources are ordinary. Paint, furniture, and cleaning sprays give off fumes. Soil under the house can send up radon gas. Then there's cooking. It may be the biggest thing that happens in your home each day. The Stove Question Eric Lebel and his team at Stanford tested gas stoves in 53 California homes. Their work ran in 2022 in Environmental Science and Technology. Two things stood out. Stoves leak gas even when switched off. And in a stuffy kitchen, one burner can push nitrogen dioxide past the federal outdoor limit in minutes. You'll have seen the headline that gas stoves cause almost 13 percent of childhood asthma. That number came from a 2023 paper, and plenty of people dispute it. Nobody measured that. It's a sum built on older studies, and several researchers doubt it can hold that much weight. My read is simple. You can argue about the asthma number. The gas in a stuffy kitchen is not up for debate. What Actually Works Three things, in order of how cheap they are. Open a window. Cross-ventilation beats any gadget, and it costs nothing. Use the range hood every time you cook. Then check that it vents outside, because many don't. A Lawrence Berkeley lab study found hoods catch only about 55 percent of what comes off the burners. The kind that blow air back into the room do worse. Then, if you want one, a filter. This one has real evidence behind it. Masako Morishita and Robert Brook ran a trial in a Detroit senior home. Small air cleaners cut dust exposure by about 40 percent. Blood pressure fell 3.4 points in three days. That one ran in 2018 in JAMA Internal Medicine. Later trials landed in the same range, 2 to 4 points. One Number Worth Knowing Carbon dioxide isn't the villain. It's the messenger. When people breathe in a closed room, carbon dioxide climbs. A high reading means fresh air isn't keeping up. Building guidelines put good airflow at about 1,100 parts per million indoors. Above that, open something. You may have seen the Harvard study where test scores doubled in fresher air. That was 24 people in a sealed room, with the air pushed far past what an office ever sees. Interesting, not settled. Air out the bedroom because stale air is unpleasant, not because a chart promised you a sharper day. Three Things Worth Knowing 01Cooking Is The Main EventFrying and grilling throw off fine dust, whatever your stove runs on. Turn the hood on before you light the burner, and leave it on a few minutes after. 02Check Where Your Hood GoesPlenty of hoods just push air through a filter and back into the room. Look for a duct leading outside. If there isn't one, open a window while you cook. 03Five Minutes Of Cross-BreezeTwo windows on facing sides of the house, both open, clear a room faster than one window open all day. Even in winter, brief and wide beats long and narrow. Here's What I'd Do This WeekRun the hood every single time you cook. Starting before the pan gets hot.Air out the bedroom for five minutes before bed. Two windows if you can.Find out where your range hood sends the air. Most people have never checked.Stop buying plants for your lungs. Buy them because you like them. Fresh air is the easiest habit to act on and the easiest to forget. Nobody sells a monthly plan for opening a window. The plant on your shelf isn't doing the job. The window behind it is. Open two of them this week, while the weather still allows it. **Stay well,**The Healing Plate |
